RF: Housing development in Berlin
Description
In the seminar we will deal with the Berlin housing construction in the 20th century. Starting from the building situation around the turn of the century with the typical Berlin backyards, we will focus on the rapid development of Neues Bauen in the 1920s under architects such as Bruno Taut, Martin Wagner or Hans Scharoun. Another focus will be on the development of housing after the Second World War. Here we look at examples such as the Hansa Quarter planned by Otto Bartning, Le Corbusier's Unité d'habitation, and Gropiusstadt in Neukölln. Lesser-known projects of the 1970s and 1980s in West and East Berlin will also be the subject of discussion, including the multiple redesigns of Mehringplatz or the housing development on Schlangenbader Strasse, which runs across a highway.
At the end of March (ca. 21.-26.03.) there will be a Berlin excursion on the topic of housing development. A total of 6 credit points can be earned in this research field (seminar+excursion).
