The photobook in the Weimar Republic
Description
The seminar deals with the genre of the photobook at the time of the Weimar Republic. The medium developed parallel to the spread of photography in the illustrated magazines of the 1920s. Similar to the process of photomontage, various photographs in the book are combined into a whole with regard to a thematic statement. The text often plays a subordinate role. Themes include new trends in photography, the modern city and its inhabitants, and the architecture of the New Building.
In the seminar we will deal in detail with the photo books of various photographers. In addition to the reference to contemporary photography, aspects such as the influence of the publishers and editors or the target group of the respective publications will be examined. In addition, the design of the books, i.e. typography, layout, dust jacket, etc., must also be taken into account in the analysis.
Since we will partly work with the original photobooks, the seminar will take place in the Art History Library. The examination performance includes a presentation and a term paper.
