This semester's lecture series, organised jointly with the Department of Architectural Theory, is entitled "The 14 Helpers in Need".
In terms of content, the focus is not on the iconography of the group of 14 saints from the 2nd to 4th century AD, who were invoked in prayer as patron saints with their own jurisdiction to alleviate various hardships. Rather, the term is to be understood in a metaphorical, i.e. figurative sense; in fact, strictly speaking, each academic discipline is likely to draw on its own "group of emergency helpers". In this sense, the art-historical part of this lecture series is about fundamental, indispensable texts, proven techniques and recurring themes and solutions with the help of which architects master the tasks and challenges set for them. The spectrum of "emergency helpers" in architecture is consequently broad, sometimes even spectacular. It ranges - to give just two examples - from the 3-panel projection, as discussed by Rudolf Wittkower in his fundamental work "Architectural Principles in the Age of Humansim" (Engl. 1962, Engl. 1969), to the demolition of architecture, for example by blasting, when this is the only solution to raze a large-scale architecture that has been vacant for a long period of time to the ground with as little effort as possible in order to make room for something new.
