EM - Visual Urban Research

Visual Urban Research - Photography and the City

The photographic camera is an important tool to research the urban space. By using the camera detailed connections can be recorded, analyzed and evaluated. The camera does not only capture the streets, buildings and green structures but also traffic sign, trash cans, bike racks and other things that are usually not mentioned in written descriptions of urban situations. The visual urban research does not primarily focus on creating a “beautiful picture” but makes connections and topics in the urban structures visible and tangible by using a conceptional and analytical approach. Necessary basics are intensive discussions on different strategies and possibilities of visualization.

You will be exploring urban spaces by working small practical assignment as well as reading assignments and the examination of photographic works. The intention of this seminar is the independent development of a photographic picture series, analytically analyzing a topic you pick yourself. For the participation a digital camera is required as well as the active participation during the seminar by sharing results and preparing short presentations and regular attendance at the assigned dates.
